How processing fees are calculated
Every card sale costs a percentage of the amount plus a fixed per-transaction fee. On a flat rate like 2.6% + 10¢, a $45 sale costs about $1.27. Multiply by your transaction count, add any monthly account, statement, PCI and gateway fees, and divide the total by your card volume to get your effective rate — the number to compare between providers.
When to shop for a better rate
Under about $10,000/month, a flat rate is fine. Between $15,000 and $25,000/month it is worth getting interchange-plus quotes, especially if a lot of your sales are debit. Above roughly $80,000/month, membership pricing can be cheaper still.
Frequently asked questions
What is an effective rate?
Your effective rate is total processing fees divided by total card volume for a period. It is the only fair way to compare two processors, because headline rates hide monthly fees, per-transaction fees and downgrades.
What rate should I enter?
Use your current headline rate. Common flat rates are 2.6%–2.9% plus 10¢–30¢ per transaction. If you are on interchange-plus, enter your all-in blended rate from a recent statement.
Does this include monthly or PCI fees?
Add them in the "monthly fees" field. Statement, PCI-compliance, gateway and minimum fees all belong there — they are a real part of your effective rate.
