Discounts and your margin
A discount comes straight out of gross profit, so a 20% price cut on a product with a 40% gross margin roughly halves the profit on that sale. Use the profit-margin calculator alongside this one to see how deep a promotion you can actually run.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percentage discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage to get the amount off, then subtract that from the original price to get the sale price.
How do I find the percentage off from two prices?
Divide the amount saved (original − sale) by the original price, then multiply by 100. For example, $80 off a $200 item is a 40% discount.
Can I stack multiple discounts?
Stacked discounts apply one after another, not added together. A 20% then 10% discount is 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72 of the price, i.e. 28% off, not 30%.
