Shopify POS Review

Unified online + in-person selling for commerce-first brands

4.4 /5 Updated September 7, 2026 By Jordan Lee
Bottom line

Shopify POS is the natural choice if your business is commerce-first: online and in-person share one catalog, one inventory and one customer list, with almost no reconciliation.

Pros

  • True unified commerce — one backend for web, retail and social
  • Excellent product, inventory and customer data model
  • Huge app ecosystem and clean, modern hardware
  • Month-to-month billing; scales from a market stall to enterprise

Cons

  • Advanced retail features require the $89/mo POS Pro add-on per location
  • Not built for food service — no kitchen or table management
  • Using an outside processor instead of Shopify Payments adds a per-transaction fee

Our full Shopify POS review

If you run a Shopify store, Shopify POS is close to a default. The same products, inventory counts, discounts and customer profiles power your website and your counter, so omnichannel reporting is just… correct, without a nightly sync.

It is deliberately not a restaurant system, and the genuinely useful retail features — staff permissions, smart inventory, in-store exchanges, low-stock forecasting — sit behind POS Pro at $89/month per location. For a commerce brand that is usually easy to justify; for a pure single-location shop with no website, a dedicated retail POS may fit better.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a paid Shopify plan to use Shopify POS?

Yes. Shopify POS requires an active Shopify subscription; POS Lite is included, POS Pro is an $89/month per-location add-on.

Can Shopify POS run a restaurant?

Not well. It has no kitchen display, coursing or table management. Use Toast, Square for Restaurants or Lightspeed Restaurant instead.

Can I use a processor other than Shopify Payments?

In many regions yes, but Shopify charges an additional transaction fee (commonly up to 2%) when you do.
