Splitting a tip pool by hours
Add every person's hours to get total hours. Each person's share is their hours ÷ total hours × the tip pool. Hours-based pooling is the most common method; some venues use a points system that weights roles differently.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the pre-tax bill by the tip percentage. To split, divide the total (bill + tip) by the number of people. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is standard; some tip on the post-tax total.
What is a tip-out?
A tip-out is the share of tips that front-of-house staff pass to support roles — bussers, bartenders, kitchen — usually as a percentage of tips or of sales. This tool splits a tip pool by hours worked.
Does my POS handle tip pooling?
Most restaurant POS systems record tips by employee and can report pooled tips by hours or points. Confirm the method matches your policy and local labor rules before relying on it for payroll.
