Lightspeed POS Review

Advanced inventory and omnichannel POS for retail and hospitality

4.3 /5 Updated September 7, 2026 By Jordan Lee
Bottom line

Lightspeed is built for businesses with real inventory complexity — deep purchasing, matrix products and omnichannel — but it is pricier and steeper to learn than mass-market POS.

Pros

  • Best-in-class inventory: variants/matrices, purchase orders, vendor catalogs
  • Strong retail and hospitality editions with genuine multi-location control
  • Good reporting and accounting integrations out of the box
  • Built-in eCommerce and integrations for omnichannel selling

Cons

  • Higher starting price than Square or Shopify POS
  • Annual billing is standard; month-to-month is the exception
  • More configuration and onboarding time before it pays off

Our full Lightspeed review

Lightspeed’s inventory engine is the reason to buy it: size/color matrices, assemblies, serial numbers, vendor catalogs and purchase orders that actually reconcile. For a shop managing thousands of SKUs across locations, that depth removes a stack of spreadsheets.

It asks more of you in return — a longer setup, an annual commitment and a higher monthly floor. Businesses with simple catalogs will feel the cost without using the power; businesses drowning in stock management usually consider it money well spent.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lightspeed better for retail or restaurants?

Both are supported via separate editions (Lightspeed Retail and Lightspeed Restaurant). Its retail inventory tooling is the standout.

Does Lightspeed lock you into its payments?

Lightspeed Payments is heavily incentivized and using an outside processor can incur a surcharge, so most customers use Lightspeed Payments.

Is there a free plan?

No. Plans start around $89/month billed annually, before add-ons.
